Who knew a half hour could cause a controversy?

It’s no secret- Tabor has been getting stricter on their rules- first with dress code, hazing and cheering at games.  The thing that has surprisingly caused much controversy, for both dorm parents and students, is room permission.  From the perspective of a senior girl in Heath house, an all senior dorm, room permission ends at 10:00, when check in is not until 10:30 now, with senior privileges.  This poses a question, what are you supposed to do for the extra half an hour?  The dorm parents in Heath called a dorm meeting; because they do not want couple congregating right outside the dorm.  Where is one supposed to go?  The Tabor rules specify that the couple cannot meander around outside on campus and the BB is too far away, especially for Heath.  Not wanting to get in trouble, seniors are wondering what to do with their senior privileges.  This is a highly brought up point in the dorm between dorm parents and girls because seniors feel they are being restricted with all the rules.  For example, three feet on the floor, door open and out by 10:00.  Since there is no where to go after, a half hour with the boyfriend is all one is going to get.  My advice to solve the problem?  Move the ending time to room permission from 10 to 10:20 for senior couples, to save the awkward in between time, creating less on a conflict for dorm parents and students.  The next thing to work on- the tight rules for when the couple is in the room itself!

I agree with you, Tory. I think school has strict rules which caused more conflicts between students and faculty members. Since I do not live in Heath house, I did not know this problem. Room permission always has been a issue at Tabor and it is worth to discuss about it. I think it will be helpful if Class of 08 plans to have meeting with faculty about senior privilege. However, seniors also have responsibility about their appropriate behaviors because we only have two month until graduation and I believe all of us are mature enough to behave appropriately.

Tabor Rules definitely has some issues with contradicting with each other. We can’t hang out in our room with a guy but we can’t be outside either. You present a good topic but you could have made it longer with more possible solutions and more supporting arguments. How would you change room permission rules? Can students really be trusted? Is the only reason to lift some of the strict rules for couples’ benefit?

Tory you bring up a good point a leave us wit ha cliff hanger. I would like a more elabrate post sometime where you fully flesh out your ideas. What are some more solutions to your problem. This skims the surface of a deeper problem at tabor, the lack of student faculty communication.

I definitely agree with you, Tory. I think that the rules should not be as strict seeing as that we are seniors. I think we are mature enough to have the rules loosened a little from when we were freshman. After all, a half an hour is a lot of time and it is unfair that we must spend it outside although our check-in time is being extended. I think you could have elaborated more on the matter.

haha, this is pretty funny. Heath is a very strict dorm when it comes to room permission, and since a majority of the senior girls reside in Heath, this is obviously a major concern with all students! I know there are many many girls in Heath that are in a relationship with boys on campus, more than any other dorm. So what should the dorm parents care to giving a little more alone time to their responsible senior girls? Obviously they don’t want s-e-x to happen. After Stroud’s speech last year, we don’t even need to ask why. But asking for extended time with room permission is reasonable!
